Codenamed "Megatron", ESPN asked The Barbarian Group to conceive an ipad app for all their content that wasn't related to Sportscenter or Scorecenter. This includes their magazine, films, books, television, and special features. As the Interaction Design Director I led the discovery and architectural documentation processes.
We first performed a gap-analysis of the competitive landscape and did stakeholder and user research to align a solution with the business requirements. We learned that there were a lot of competing interests between all the different publishing channels and digital rights.
We determined that we would need to build a bespoke application that could bring a variety of content to play in equally prominent ways.
Architecting the application was a challenge as ESPN has a wide range of payment options for various content ranging from free, to subscription-based with a bit of rights-management thrown in the middle.
For the bespoke experience it was our goal that every image, button, and tap feel intentional to the user. We took special care to style any iOS features that come out of the box so that they appeared to be made from scratch
